Should Kids Know About Condoms?
by Press Release, AIDS Foundation of Chicago | original link
Illinois has a choice. For the first time, the state can choose to apply for federal funding to teach kids medically-accurate, age-appropriate sex education that includes information on condoms as well as abstinence. Or, Illinois can apply for money that keeps kids in the dark and does nothing to prepare them for a healthy future.
Sound like a tough decision? We don’t think so either.
Send Governor Quinn a message: Say YES to PREP, say NO to Title V!
The federal government recently announced funding for two programs. One—the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP)—will fund comprehensive sex education that provides young people with the medically accurate, age-appropriate, and evidence-based sex education they need to make informed decisions, be sexually healthy, and avoid HIV.
The other funding—Title V—can be used to teach one thing only: abstinence. Abstinence-only funding doesn’t give kids the skills or the info they will need when they decide to become sexually active. We see the consequences of this failed Bush-era policy every single day, with one young person aged 13-24 infected with HIV every single hour in the United States.
Illinois youth deserve complete and honest information to make their own decisions about their lives and to prepare themselves for a healthy future.
Tell Governor Quinn: YES to PREP, NO to Title V!
